Pittsburgh: Why Go

Pittsburgh, PA: Fly & Drive -- A Confluence of Culture
Once known as the home of "Big Steel," Pittsburgh has reemerged as a city where modern art, fine dining, and three rivers merge to form one well-rounded cultural experience.

Useful phrase worth knowing: "Yinz" is the Pittburghean phrase meaning the second person plural, or "ya'll" if you're in Texas.

Break the bank dinner: Diners at the Common Plea, situated in the city's legal and political district, are literally summoned to partake in specialties like homemade pasta and their famous butterflied veal chop with arugula, onions, and tomatoes.

Most bang for your buck: Locals love the Strip District for the rockin' live music, shopping bargains, and sophisticated eats at workingman's prices.

History lesson: George Washington scouted the Forks of Ohio in 1755, the land at the fork of the Allegheny, Monongahela, and Ohio Rivers, because it was "extremely well-situated for a fort, and having command of both rivers." It's here that left a tiny group of men to build Fort Prince George for the British.

Local Secret: The Shaker Woods Festival happens every late summer or early fall, where natives from Pittsburgh make the journey to join more than 200 artisans, cooks, and entertainers on a heavily-shaded rural copse to sell their goods and display their skills.

Place we love, even if it's touristy: While his fame and fortune were made in New York City, Andy Warhol's career began in his industrial hometown of Pittsburgh. Now home to his museum, which stretches seven floors, it is one of the only (and possibly the largest) single-artist museums in the United States.

Get out of dodge: Seventy-two miles outside of Pittsburgh flows Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater, an architectural wonder that juts boldly over waterfalls on Bear Creak Run. (It was once called "the greatest house built in the United States.")
